Best VPS for a Minecraft Java Server: 4 Options Compared
There is no single best Minecraft VPS for every world. Start with the server edition, player locations, plugins or mods, expected world activity and whether the CPU is shared or dedicated. For a small private Java Edition server, 4 GB RAM can be a sensible test size. Use 8 GB or more when a modpack or plugin set needs it, then validate tick performance with your own world before inviting everyone.
This is a source audit and selection framework, not a hands-on benchmark. Provider pages and technical documentation were checked on 20 September 2026. We did not simulate players, publish test results or assign ratings.

Four VPS starting points
Hetzner's published CX23 price is the lowest in this shortlist when the plan is orderable, but it uses shared resources. Hostinger KVM 2 includes more RAM and storage with promotional and renewal pricing. DigitalOcean makes shared and dedicated CPU choices explicit. Vultr offers a broad location choice. None is declared a benchmark winner.
| Provider and plan | Published resources | Price context checked 20 Sep 2026 | Useful when | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner CX23View provider | 2 shared vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe | 5.49 EUR monthly in Germany and Finland, excluding VAT and IPv4 | A low-cost EU starting point for a small world | Shared CPU can vary under sustained load. The public Cloud page did not list CX23 during this audit, so confirm availability. Affiliate attribution is not demonstrated. |
| Hostinger KVM 2Check pricing | 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe | 8.99 USD monthly promotional rate, renewing at 14.99 USD monthly for a two-year term; paid upfront | More memory for plugins or a moderate modpack | Compare the full upfront and renewal cost, not only the monthly equivalent. |
| DigitalOcean BasicCompare Droplets | 2 shared vCPU, 4 GiB RAM, 80 GiB SSD | 24 USD monthly cap | Hourly billing, documentation and several regions matter | Shared CPU is not the same as dedicated game-server performance. The 4 GiB CPU-Optimized alternative is 42 USD monthly. |
| Vultr Cloud ComputeCheck plan | Plan vc2-2c-4gb: 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, 3 TB bandwidth | 20 USD monthly in the public plan API | A nearby location is the main decision factor | Confirm the current plan and availability in the intended location before purchase. |
Prices, promotions and regional availability can change. Recheck the exact plan and total checkout cost before ordering.
Size by workload, then test
Player count alone is not enough. Ten users exploring new chunks can demand more CPU and disk work than a larger group standing in one established area.
- Start with a measured trial. Use 4 GB RAM for a small private Vanilla or Paper world and leave memory for the operating system.
- Account for the real software set. Start at 8 GB when a modpack or larger plugin set documents higher memory needs.
- Choose the player region. Measure latency from the locations where people will actually connect.
- Load the real world. Add the intended world, plugins, whitelist and simulation distance before judging the plan.
- Observe a representative session. Watch tick health, CPU saturation, memory pressure, free disk and network use.
- Change the constrained resource. If tick performance is CPU-bound, compare dedicated vCPU before assuming more RAM is the answer.
Correct Minecraft Java server architecture
The normal game connection is not a browser request and does not need Nginx or a TLS certificate. A database is optional only when a specific plugin needs one. The base server stores its world and configuration as files.
Administration path: restricted SSH using keys and a limited source range. Do not expose RCON or a plugin database publicly.
Minimal safe deployment checklist
- Choose Minecraft Java Edition and confirm the Java version required by the selected server release. Paper documents Java requirements by Minecraft version.
- Open only the gameplay port, normally TCP 25565, plus restricted SSH administration. Do not expose a database or RCON port publicly.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA explicitly. If you use the maintained itzg container, mount its data directory to persistent host storage.
- Pin the game, Paper, plugin and mod versions after the first compatibility test. Do not let an unattended major version change rewrite a live world.
- Enable a whitelist for a private server and keep operator privileges limited.
- Back up the world and configuration to storage outside the VPS. Test a restore before treating the backup as reliable.
- Monitor memory, free disk, CPU pressure and server logs. Recheck after every game, plugin or mod update.
Railway is a different buying decision
Railway can expose a game server through a TCP Proxy and attach persistent storage, but it is not a fixed-resource VPS plan. The Hobby subscription is 5 USD monthly and includes 5 USD of resource usage. Railway currently lists metered RAM, CPU, volume storage and network egress. A continuously running Minecraft workload can therefore cost materially more than the subscription headline.
Use Railway when its deployment workflow is more important than conventional VPS pricing and you accept metered resources, TCP Proxy setup and volume constraints. Otherwise choose a VM from the main table.
Review Railway resource pricingProvider decisions in plain language
Choose Hetzner CX23 when
The plan is orderable in your intended region, your players are mainly in Europe, the world is small, budget matters and you are willing to measure whether shared CPU is sufficient. The published price excludes VAT and IPv4. It is not presented as a tested universal winner.
Choose Hostinger KVM 2 when
You want 8 GB RAM and 100 GB NVMe in one plan and accept a longer upfront commitment. Compare the current promotional rate with the renewal rate.
Choose DigitalOcean when
You want transparent hourly billing and may need to move from a Basic shared-CPU Droplet to a CPU-Optimized dedicated-vCPU plan. Compare the exact plan, not only the provider name.
Choose Vultr when
The nearest available location is the deciding factor. Recheck plan availability in the intended region and use the public plan API or checkout as the current source of truth.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much RAM does a Minecraft VPS need?
There is no universal amount per player. A 4 GB host can be a practical test size for a small Java Edition world. Mods, plugins, world generation and simulation distance can require more. Leave memory for Linux and measure the real workload before upgrading.
Is a shared vCPU enough?
It can be enough for a small private server, but neighboring workloads can affect shared CPU consistency. If server tick performance is CPU-bound during representative play, test a dedicated-vCPU plan instead of assuming more RAM will fix it.
Do I need Nginx and HTTPS for Minecraft?
Not for the normal Java Edition game connection. Players connect to the server TCP port, normally 25565. Nginx and HTTPS are relevant only to a separate website or compatible web administration panel.
Does a Minecraft server need a database?
The base Java server stores world and configuration data as files. Some plugins can use a database, but that is an application-specific addition and should not be exposed to the public internet.
Is Railway a VPS for Minecraft?
Railway can run a container, expose a TCP service and attach a persistent volume, but its billing and operational model differ from a conventional VPS. Compare metered CPU, RAM, storage and egress before using the 5 USD subscription headline as a server estimate.
